Speakers at the "Into the Light", multifaith conversation at Princeton University on Thursday included a Sikh American filmmaker, a Rabbi, an Imam and a Presbyterian minister.

The event organized by Peace Islands Institute (formerly Interfaith Dialog Center), Princeton University and two other groups began with Rabbi Justus Baird pointing out that 9/11 affected people from many nations and faiths.

Filmmaker Valarie Kaur said that 9/11 changed life for Sikh Americans like herself forever.

Kaur said because of their appearance, Sikh Americans were put on the defensive and were unable to grieve in the aftermath of the tragedy like other Americans.

Imam Sohaib Sultan said after 9/11 the Muslim community was forced to open up and launch a public relations campaign in the US.

Sultan said tens years later more than 50 percent of Americans still have a negative view of Islam.

The consenus at the event was that religious leaders and communities have a to play a bigger role in creating a multifaith conversation especially due to the mistrust generated post-9/11.

Participants said they were heartened to see the efforts being made towards that goal.
On Feb. 17, 2014, gathering in Istanbul at a meeting organized by Turkish Review and Hira magazines, Arab and Turkish intellectuals have discussed the role of the state in Muslim societies and agreed that Islamist politicians have lost their test with power, as they were transformed by the state instead of transforming the state.

Mustafa Yesil, President of the Journalists and Writers Foundation, speaks on the Hizmet Movement’s stance on the recent issues in Turkey:

"Hizmet is a human-centered conciliatory civil society movement with a constructive attitude. It gets its references from the Qur'an and sunnah by all means. It is a civil entity that establishes relations with different segments of society in the same way the Prophet Muhammad did; partners in projects with them; and gets along by embracing pluralism as one of its principles in building societal peace.

It has never chosen fighting as a solution. It has never believed fighting takes us anywhere. When the current unrest first came up, after the December 17th corruption operation, the Honorable Gulen sent a letter to the President and said these words: “We, as a movement of 50 years, or 100 in a sense, have never made a concession, or changed any of our principles and values . We are still standing up for the same values and principles that made us support AK Party in the past. If our friends, who have moved away from their initial values and principles and drifted around, re-embrace their past principles they will finds us at the very same place. We can assure that. For the sake of restoring peace, if they take one step, we are ready to take 10 steps in return.

If there’s a misconduct or corruption, the ruling party should stop viewing it as an operation targeting its existence. Because corruption is not peculiar to AK Party period. It happened in the past too. And just like the other politicians did in the past AK Party can adopt the same stance against it too. No wonder that there will be people who illegally take advantage of a party in power for nearly 10-12 years now. There will be some who get dirty or show deviations in their feelings and reason. There’s nothing more understandable than that. What needs to be done here is to eliminate this damaging group of people and let the AK Party carry on with its previously powerful principles.

However, we find it hard to understand that allegations that the current corruption probe -referred to as a judicial coup- targets the government has been persistently kept on the agenda. There’s no way to explain or prove the allegation that Hizmet people in the police force and judiciary -- or the parallel structure as they refer to-- staged a coup on the government. Although he kept saying since then that he would prove it, -It’s been two months and-, unfortunately, no actor or criminal has been held accountable or charged yet.

Peace and unity over this issue will contribute not only to our own solidarity and unity but to the region’s as well. Especially this country which has become a beacon of hope, shouldn’t be disheartened. We are ready to make any sacrifice on our part. Gulen even said, “If I am supposed to call on any particular people for the sake of reconciliation and unity in the country, I will do that. If what your actual intention is to be politically supported by our friends, we are still at the very same place as long as you advocate democracy and rule of law. When you return from where you are drifted, you will see us standing by your side with the same affection and proximity."

A symposium on the Gulen Movement was held at Columbia University in New York. Organized by the Turkish Cultural Center and Institute of Turkish Studies, the event was dedicated to examining Islam's role in contemporary Turkey.

Sessions focused broadly on the role of Islam in the Ottoman Empire, along with Islamic movements that sprung up in the aftermath of its collapse, from the more traditionally based to the well-known Gulen movement.

Other sessions spotlighted the current relationship between Islam and politics, examining both the 2007 elections and the interplay between culture and religion in Turkish politics.

Bekim Agai, an assistant professor for Islamic cities at the University of Bonn lectured on" the educational network around the Fethullah Gulen movement". He said that the movement had been successful because of the followers' strong networking within the community in what led them into the modern world by keeping them within the Islamic core.
Guests included a total of 21 members of congress, congressional staffers, prominent scholars, clergy and members of the media.

Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, the secretary general of the Organization of Islamic Conference, made the keynote speech at the dinner at the U.S. Congress and stressed the need to energize interfaith dialogue. Professor Ihsanoglu said that any terrorist or radical cannot represent Islam. Ihsanoglu pointed out that Islam was not a religion of violence and expressed concern about the rising sentiment of islamophobia around the globe. “Extremists exist in all religious traditions. Sometimes extremists have spoken on behalf of Islam,” he stated. He said “What we really need is to have a more comprehensive framework, which I call historic reconciliation between Islam and Christianity, Islam and the West." Ihsanoglu called upon representatives of all faiths to have an agenda for their interfaith dialogue to transform misconceptions to mutual respect.

There is a range of distinct connections that may be found between Rumi in his time and Gülen in his time—our time. Fundamentally, the former one spoke and taught and wrote and while the latter speaks and teaches and writes of issues that reach beyond themselves, because they are not time-bound. Ultimately a central point of discussion is to demonstrate how (without presuming to state definitively as to why), within broad intellectual, cultural and spiritual frameworks, two individuals so far apart in time can be and have been within their respective times of thinking, feeling and writing, ahead of their time—and ultimately timeless, at least to those willing to listen carefully to their respective words. Rumi's words, as Gülen recognizes, are really directed to all humans who share the potential to hear and see and who value and seek to hear and see inwardly as much as and sometimes more than outwardly. This is a sentiment shared, in fact, by Rumi and Gülen, each of whom in his own way is an important part of exploring and explaining how to carry "this great love ... inside me" out to the world.

One of the key issues facing the country is the Kurdish issue, and he says the Hizmet movement supports the peace process.

Fethullah Gulen, Turkish scholar: "We were never completely aligned with any political party. But on the Kurdish issue, we were supporting the peace process before the government."

The Hizmet or service movement, through civil service initiatives, has been active in the region. It has focused on education, healthcare and religious affairs.

But establishing security in this region has been an uphill climb..

Abdullah Ocalan is a divisive figure in Turkiye. He is either considered as the leader of the Kurdish movement or a terrorist. Right now, he is in prison, and the government is fragmented on whether to engage with him or osctracize his cause. Gulen speaks of his understanding of the issue

Fethullah Gulen, Turkish scholar: "I never said anything openly but they once called him terrorist."

Ocalan and PKK have resented the educational services and interfaith intercultural dialogue provided by the Hizmet movement. They accused Fethullah Gulen of being part of assimilation project for the Kurds.

Fethullah Gulen: "Ocalan was unhappy with our activities"

Gulen says the upcoming elections can be used to portray the Hizmet movement as opposing the peace process, while the government supports it.

Fethullah Gulen: "The current government-- to get Kurdish votes-- now blames the Hizmet movement as an obstacle to the peace process."

Prime Minister Erdogan's government's decision to have contact, organize talks and even negotiations with Ocalan or the PKK has been fiercely criticized by opposing parties.

Gulen offers an alternative civil solution to the region without opposing nor criticizing the government.

In an already destabilized region, the peace process has the potential to finally bring about true change. But the road to security and prosperity is a long and winding one.
While critics characterize the Gulen movement as a cult of personality, admirers prefer the term Hizmet movement, after the Turkish word for ‘service.’ And Aslandogan compared Fethullah Gulen to U.S. civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.

“The civil rights movement advocated equal rights for all citizens," said Aslandogan. "Similarly, in Turkey, Gulen advocated for equality and equal opportunity for all citizens - observant Muslims, and others who historically had been discriminated against.

“The civil rights movement abstained from violence. Similarly, Gulen throughout his life always criticized and rejected violence,” Aslandogan said. After the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States, he said Gulen called Osama bin Laden “a monster.”

As an imam in Turkey, Gulen encouraged his followers to become educated, and the movement spread beyond Turkish borders, with hundreds of schools and charities established in other countries.

Fethullah Gulen has been called Turkey's second most powerful man. He is also a recluse, who lives in self-imposed exile in the US.

An apparent power struggle between his followers and those around the Turkish Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has reached a new pitch of intensity and loathing.
Since arriving in the US in the late 1990s, Mr Gulen, 74, has not given a single broadcast interview. What rare communication there has been with the media has almost exclusively been conducted via email.

But now, the BBC has had exclusive access to the Muslim cleric. I travelled with Guney Yildiz from the BBC Turkish Service to a remote part of Pennsylvania to meet the man.

In the interview, Mr Gulen denied using his influence to start investigations into alleged corruption among senior members of Mr Erdogan's AK Party which have led to a number of police commissioners being sacked and to some of Mr Erdogan's allies being arrested.

“What I am most impressed by is the extent to which his teachings have been appropriated in the lives of people who are very devoted to the principles and truths he espouses.”

"The works of Gulen promote a particular living of an ethos that’s grounded in particular virtues. An d I have come to understand that these virtues to be at the heart of Islam. I haven’t met anyone from Hizmet that doesn’t embody these virtues. It’s kind of witness to a type of living Islam which, I believe the core of Islam. A promotion of peaceful relations between persons rooted in deep love of God and respect for diversity God has created ” Dr. Conway remarked.

According to Conway, all of Hizmet educational and charitable initiatives are committed to human welfare, development of human’s capacity and potential and responses to human suffering in need.
The principal goal of the Rumi Forum is to promote peace in the world and contribute to a peaceful coexistence of the adherents of different faiths, cultures, ethnicities and races.

Commensurate with its mission, the Forum takes its name from the 13th. Century Sufi philosopher-poet Mawlana Jalaladdin Rumi, whose reach embraced all humanity as personified by his message, "Come, whoever you are, come..." It welcomes everyone who has a desire to explore 'the other' in the spirit of mutual respect and tolerance.

Like Rumi, Fethullah Gulen, a world renown scholar, thinker and activist, has throughout his life encouraged coming together of people and ideas to help overcome ignorance, prejudice and misunderstanding. Fethullah Gulen has met the late Pope John II, the Greek Orthodox Bartholomew, the Chief Rabbi of Israel, and Armenian Patriarch among many other spiritual leaders, and is a role model for dialogue.

Through the inspiration of Fethullah Gulen, the Rumi Forum endeavors to contribute a sustainable peaceful coexistence amongst all communities of the world.
Speaker Dr. Dogan Koc, Executive Director of the Gulen Institute at the University of Houston, delivered his lecture on "The Hizmet (aka Gulen) Movement: Origin, Activities, Structure, and the Critics."

Dr. Koc's lecture covered topics such as Fethullah Gulen’s life, the Gulen Movement's focus on education, interfaith dialogue, and humanitarian acts, and finally the critiques of the Movement. The Movement's work in education is through the establishment of international schools which are staffed by a diverse faculty of different faiths and cultures from each area. The schools' studies focus on math and science. Themes such as peace and tolerance are delivered in various interfaith dialogues. There is also a focus on delivering aid to those in need and providing educational scholarships. All activities are stemming from the Islamic teachings of Gulen where he shows that Muslims can live a traditional, religious life alongside being modern, educated peoples in a productive world.

The lectures were well-attended and consisted of a brief introduction by Britton Koroglu of Charleston, Akif Aydin of Clemson, Dr. Carl Evans of Columbia, and Akif Aydin of Greenville. Following the lectures there was a Question & Answer discussion and light refreshments.
In an age of overspecialization in learning and over-indulgence in day-to-day occupations, The Fountain’s discourse refers to an overarching coverage of the human life with content as diverse and rich as the human life itself, yet with a common thread and pattern that is neatly knitted all the way through our diverse departments under humanities and sciences.

The Fountain is a composition from which our inner calling echoes, a reflection of what is not always visible to the eye, or a response to the yearning deep in the heart and mind which sometimes finds its definition best expressed in a poem, and at other times in a journey into outer space or through the veins of the human body. It is reading the universe, the major book of creation, and making sense out of it by way of the manual of Divine guidance. The Fountain is an effort to try and see the reality through the veils of apparent causes and to obtain our share from each phenomenon, each of which is a letter enclosed with a message addressing us.

Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his AK party have proposed eliminating the schools, which provide private tuition classes to help high school children prepare for university entrance exams.

This has angered supporters of the Gulen movement, which finances and runs many of the schools. Numerous hashtags about the row have been tweeted millions of times over the past week.
#BBCtrending reports that the row points to deeper tensions between Mr Erdogan and the Gulen movement.
In the second part, he moves on to “Gulen with regard to Sufism”, the school that Gulen both distinguishes himself from and has a lot in common with.
The one-day international conference reflects different dimensions of the Gülen Movement, which originated in Turkey and then expanded throughout the world. International experts discuss the movement from the following viewpoints: theological, intellectual, financial, structural, political, gender, and sociocultural. This multidimensional approach provides useful pointers about this transnational movement. The Gülen Movement, also called the Volunteers Movement, is rooted in the teachings of Muslim scholar M. Fethullah Gülen. The movement's messages and praxis are discussed and reflected on, and its organization and accomplishments, including its resonance thoroughly analyzed. By focusing on its seven dimensions, this interdisciplinary conference contributes to a comprehensive view of one of the most widely discussed societal programs in the contemporary world.
Among all, one aspect of the movement he has been particularly impressed with is its emphasis on high quality education along with efforts to make it available to those who, otherwise, wouldn’t be able to afford it. Second was the generosity of Hizmet (Gulen Movement) participants, which Lefebure has witnessed in person.
“This study is based on my own experience of working within the movement in a number of different locations and roles over a period of almost eight years, I offer for consideration the view that it is only the remarkable harmony between Gülen’s philosophy of education and the cultural practice of his followers which can explain adequately the continuing growth and success of the movement. It is my contention that Gülen is the unusual individual who is able to work with multiple paradigms simultaneously and this is one of the reasons that he has such extraordinary influence and leadership capacity.”
The international conference "Islam in the Contemporary World: The Fethullah Gulen Movement in Thought and Practice" aims to explore the appeal, meaning, and impact of Fethullah Gülen and the Gülen movement on Turkish, regional, and - increasingly - global societies. In the contemporary world, Muslim communities are undergoing radical social, economic, political and intellectual change. The underlying goal of this conference is to examine the issues facing the contemporary Muslim world in transition and the relations between Islam and the West. In particular, the conference explores the ideas of Fethullah Gülen – a Turkish Muslim scholar, author and education activist – and the impact of the civic projects initiated by participants in a social phenomenon called the Gülen movement. Originating in Turkey but becoming increasingly transnational, the Fethullah Gülen movement has a universal educational and interfaith agenda that aims to promote creative and positive relations between the Muslim world and the West, and to make a constructive contribution to the dialogue of civilizations, the reconciliation of science and religion, global education initiatives, democracy, and religious plurality.
